Responsible gambling
Gambling is a form of entertainment that costs money. It is not a way to make money, fix a debt or recover a loss. This page explains the tools we give you to stay in control, the signs worth watching for, and where to get free help that has nothing to do with us.
Need to talk to someone right now? Gambling Help Online is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day on 1800 858 858. If you are in crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. In New Zealand, the Gambling Helpline is 0800 654 655. None of these services are run by MATE29 and nothing you say to them comes back to us.
The house edge is not a rumour
Every game on this site is built to return less than it takes, on average, over time. Our floor average is 96.4% return to player, which is genuinely high by industry standards โ and it still means that across millions of spins the house keeps roughly A$3.60 of every A$100 wagered. That figure is a long-run population average, not a promise about your evening. Some sessions you will finish ahead. Over a long enough period, the arithmetic does not bend.
We think you are better off knowing that plainly than reading it in a footnote. Decide before you log in what the session is worth to you as entertainment, the same way you would decide what a concert ticket is worth. If you would not be comfortable losing that amount, it is too much.
Set your limits before you need them
Limits work because they are set by a calm version of you and enforced against a tired one. Every tool below lives in Account โ Responsible Play and takes under a minute to switch on. Any live chat agent can also set them up for you if you would rather not go looking.
One rule applies across all of them: tightening a limit takes effect immediately, loosening one takes 24 hours. That delay exists so that no limit can be lifted in the middle of a losing run. It is not negotiable and support cannot override it, which is precisely the point.
| Tool | What it does | Range | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can add to your balance | Daily, weekly or monthly | Instantly when lowered, 24 hours when raised |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses; play stops when the cap is reached | Daily, weekly or monthly | Instantly when lowered, 24 hours when raised |
| Wager limit | Caps total turnover regardless of wins | Daily or weekly | Instantly when lowered, 24 hours when raised |
| Session timer | On-screen reminder, then automatic logout | 15 minutes to 4 hours | Immediately |
| Reality check | Pop-up showing time played and net position | Every 15, 30 or 60 minutes | Immediately |
| Cool-off | Short break; account reopens automatically | 24 hours to 30 days | Immediately, cannot be cancelled |
| Self-exclusion | Long-term closure, no logins or deposits | 6 months to 5 years, or permanent | Immediately, irreversible for the full term |
Deposit, loss and wager limits
A deposit limit caps what goes in. A loss limit caps what you can be down by, which is a different and often more useful number โ you can deposit A$100, win A$400, and still be within a A$50 loss cap. A wager limit caps total turnover regardless of outcome, and is the right tool if you find yourself playing for far longer than you intended even on break-even nights.
You can run all three at once. Most players who use limits well set a monthly deposit cap they treat as a budget line and a daily loss cap that ends the night early on a bad run.
Session timers and reality checks
Time distortion is the least discussed risk in online gambling. There are no clocks or windows in a game screen, and a "quick twenty minutes" turns into two hours more easily than most people expect. A reality check interrupts play at a set interval and shows you two numbers: how long you have been playing and whether you are up or down. A session timer goes further and logs you out.
Cool-off and self-exclusion
A cool-off is a short circuit-breaker of 24 hours to 30 days. Your account locks, your settings stay intact, and it reopens on its own at the end. It cannot be cancelled early, so use it freely โ it is designed to be a low-stakes decision.
Self-exclusion is the serious one. It runs from six months to five years or permanently, blocks logins and deposits, removes you from every marketing list we hold, and cannot be reversed for its full term no matter who you ask or what you tell us. Any remaining real-money balance is paid to your verified account before closure. If you are weighing this up, our player-protection lead reviews every request personally and will not try to talk you out of it.
Self-exclusion at MATE29 only covers MATE29. To block yourself from a wider set of Australian-licensed services at once, look into BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register. It is free, run independently of operators, and one registration applies across every provider signed up to it.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It shows up as a series of small changes that each seem explainable on their own. Read the list below honestly โ not as a diagnosis, but as a prompt. If more than two or three ring true, it is worth a conversation with someone on the help lines further down this page.
- You have gambled more money or more often than you intended, more than once.
- You have gone back the same day or the next day specifically to win back a loss.
- You have used money set aside for rent, bills, groceries or a family commitment.
- You have borrowed money, sold something, or used credit to keep playing.
- You have been vague or untruthful with someone close to you about how much you play.
- You feel restless, irritable or flat when you cannot play.
- Gambling is the thing you reach for when you are stressed, bored, lonely or upset.
- You are playing longer sessions than you used to for the same feeling.
- You have missed work, study, sleep or family time because of a session.
- You have lied about a win to make the overall picture look better than it is.
- Someone who cares about you has raised it with you, even gently, even once.
- You have promised yourself you would stop, and then not stopped.
Chasing losses is the single clearest danger signal. The urge to "get it back" is the point at which gambling stops being entertainment and starts being an attempt to solve a problem it created. If you recognise that feeling, stop the session and set a cool-off before you do anything else. The games will still be here in a week.
Practical habits that help
- Decide the amount before you log in, and treat it as spent the moment you deposit.
- Never gamble to recover a loss. A loss is finished. The next spin does not know about it.
- Don't play while drunk, exhausted, medicated or upset. Every one of those degrades judgement in exactly the way that costs money.
- Keep gambling money separate from money with a job to do. A dedicated account with a fixed monthly transfer makes the boundary physical rather than theoretical.
- Take a real break every hour, out of the chair and away from the screen.
- Never borrow to gamble, including credit cards, buy-now-pay-later or money from friends.
- Balance it against other things you enjoy. If gambling is the only entertainment in your week, the pressure on it is too high.
- Check your history monthly. Account โ History shows the real total, which is often not the total you carry in your head.
Protecting people under 18
MATE29 is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. We verify date of birth at registration and again through identity documents before any withdrawal, and we close accounts immediately where age has been misrepresented, returning deposits and voiding winnings.
If children or teenagers share your device, do not save your password in the browser, and consider filtering software such as Gamban, BetBlocker or Net Nanny. These block gambling sites at the device level, which is a stronger control than anything an individual operator can offer.

If you are worried about someone else
Gambling harm rarely stays with one person. If you are living with it second-hand, Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858 supports family members directly and you do not need the gambler's permission or knowledge to call. Financial counselling through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 is also free and independent, and can help protect a shared household from decisions you did not make.
What generally does not help is monitoring, ultimatums or paying off a debt without conditions. What tends to help is naming what you have noticed without accusation, and staying available. That is a hard line to walk, which is exactly why those services exist.
How to reach us about this
Any live chat agent can set limits, start a cool-off or begin self-exclusion for you without a single question about why. You can also email [email protected] and ask for the player-protection team directly. We will never respond to a limit or exclusion request with a retention offer, and members on cool-off or self-exclusion are removed from every marketing list we operate.
